He calls for professional, humane policing as 246 trainee officers pass out

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Thursday urged police to earn public trust through professionalism, impartiality and humane conduct, stressing equal legal protection for all citizens.

“Police must earn people’s confidence, ensure their security and provide legal services to everyone equally,” he said at the passing-out parade of 246 trainee officers at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sardah, Rajshahi.

The graduates included 84 probationary sergeants from the 27th batch and 162 cadet sub-inspectors from the 43rd batch (2006).

The minister said maintaining law and order and restoring public confidence were the government’s top priorities. He said the government was working to rebuild the police force through reforms, recruitment, training, infrastructure development and modern equipment.

Urging the new officers to learn from past experiences, he warned against discrimination, abuse of power and unethical conduct. Police must investigate cases impartially under the Constitution and the law while protecting the rights of innocent people, he said.

Salahuddin identified cybercrime, online fraud, financial scams, drug trafficking, human trafficking and organised crime as major challenges, calling for greater use of modern technology, scientific investigation, data analysis and digital forensics.

He said officers could serve in UN peacekeeping missions and specialised police units but warned that negligence, misconduct and breaches of discipline would face strict punishment.

The minister inspected the parade, took the salute and distributed awards to trainees for outstanding performance.

Moha Omar Faruk was named best sergeant in the probationary sergeant batch, while Mohammad Jahangir Alam was named best cadet in the sub-inspector batch.

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir, Bangladesh Police Academy Principal Md Mainul Hasan and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
